5 Amazing WoC Owned Winter Beauty Picks

WOC Owned Winter Picks.png

The holidays may have come and gone, but winter is here to stay. This is a difficult season for many, considering that it’s freezing out, the days are short (if you work a 9-5, practically non-existent), and it’s impossible to ignore the toll that the dry air takes on the skin. Here are a few staples that keep me sane during this time:

UnSun Cosmetics Sunscreen

Protect your melanin! UV rays are no joke and they’re just as dangerous during the winter as they during the summer. Katoyna Breaux (aka Frank Ocean’s mama) created this groundbreaking sunscreen after years of dealing the white overcast that most sunscreen formulas leave on the skin - no matter how hard you try to blend it out. I first came across Unsun Cosmetics on Twitter (@unsuncosmetics) earlier this summer and I’ve never looked back. I love that aside from blending in with my skin tone, the sunscreen doesn’t have a strong smell, blends to a matte finish, and lasts for a while (my first tube lasted around four months). The brand has now expanded to hand creams and lip balms, which I cannot wait to try. What I also love about this brand is the top tier customer service - I received my package in less than a week and all my questions were answered via Twitter.

SkinButtr

Body butters are my personal preference during the cold months as they usually serve as a protective barrier against the drying, low temperatures. A little goes a long way, and I’ve noticed that butters provide longer lasting moisture than lotions. SkinButtr has the absolute best scents out of any line of butters I’ve tried before (I love, love, love the GingrLemon and HoneyAlmnd). You can purchase the butters in two sizes - 2 oz. for $8 and 8 oz. $25. The 8 ounce size usually lasts 2-3 months for me. They’re best when used directly after a shower. The butters are super creamy and leave you smelling and feeling heavenly.

This one may come off as controversial, but stay with me. The holidays (and quite frankly, the rest of the year) can be overwhelming. Between shopping, outrageous family members, and the world we’re currently living in, it’s easy to feel anxious and mentally drained. Coco Loco is by no means a miracle worker, but it definitely helps me keep it together. It is CBD infused coconut oil that can be taken internally, added to food/drinks, or applied directly to the skin. As someone who deals with anxiety in my everyday life, I was beyond relieved when I came across Flower Food (@flwrfood) on my Instagram explore page. I was skeptical at first, but after doing a bit of research I decided to give the brand a try and I am so glad that I did. Aside from helping my manage my anxiety, I’ve also applied the oil topically to my occasional eczema flare ups and it seems to make the skin less itchy and noticeably softer.

SkinButtr Scrubs

I really, really, really need to get my hands on (at least) one of SkinButtr’s Scrubs. There’s no point in piling moisturizer on top of dry, flaky skin. The ingredients include shea butter and vitamin E...both proven to enhance one’s natural skin tone and to significantly soften the skin. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve walked out of my apartment, moisturized and smelling good, only to find an ashy spot a couple hours later. Fingers crossed that the right scrub will help.

Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Lipsticks

Because they’re pretty and Rihanna said to buy them. No, not technically winter-related, but in RiRi we trust.
