Spoken Black Girl Founder, Rowana Abbensetts-Dobson

For as long as I could remember, I’ve been an organizer. I still proudly claim the title of President & Founder of my 4th grade Harry Potter club. Even then, I enjoyed engaging my peers around literature. It seemed there was no better way to get to know a person than knowing the characters they identify with and the stories that pull on their heartstrings. There’s nothing like commiserating with your friends over the main character’s bad decisions or how the author captured a certain feeling perfectly in words. As an author, I aim to create those experiences and get better at it as I practice my craft. As a reader, I yearn to share the collective joy that literature can offer. We all know that writing and reading can be healing activities that help us view life from a different point of view.

Now let’s get into the practice of writing the stories that will set us (and others) free.

Introducing My Vision for Write Heal Thrive

Write Heal Thrive was born out of my desire for close literary community. As a writer, I know that this journey can be a lonely one, no matter what stage you find yourself at. I’ve had so many formative literary experiences in my years working in publishing and nonprofit communications that I really want to share with more writers, especially Black women writers.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to attend workshops, conferences, and study writing while pursuing my MFA in Fiction. Every step of the way, I’ve had a sister friend encouraging me to move forward and seize the opportunity. I believe we have to support each other and put each other on to new opportunities. We have the power to change the landscape of what Black stories look like and what wellness looks like.

In the words of literary ancestor, Dr. Maya Angelou, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

The Write Heal Thrive Collective is a space where you can check in and show up for yourself as a writer and creative on a healing journey. It’s a space for women who love literature, learning, and leveling up in their lives.
