A Note from Our Founder

Spoken Black Girl exists because I believe that writing is a healing practice.

Writing and storytelling can lead to personal transformation, while also inspiring change in the reader or listener. Spoken Black Girl exists to amplify the stories that are otherwise overlooked, centering the writers and artists whose voices are pushed to the margins of mainstream media.

Every voice deserves to be celebrated.

Please join us in keeping this worthy mission alive.
— Rowana Abbensetts-Dobson

Spoken Black Girl is an independent publishing company, not a registered nonprofit organization. Contributions are voluntary and are not tax-deductible. Your support directly helps us continue publishing, creating programs, and amplifying Black women's voices.

Who We Are

Spoken Black Girl Publishing strives for equality and representation within the publishing and mental health and wellness industries by publishing the voices of Black women and women of color writers and providing affordable workshops, educational events, services, and empowering media to break the mental health stigma in communities of color while leveling the playing field in publishing. We believe that all voices deserve to be heard, and our team is dedicated to bringing quality and value to our audience. Through stories that heal and create an outlet for marginalized voices to be heard, we hope to change the discourse on mental health while amplifying voices that often go unheard.

Spoken Black Girl Publishing works at the intersection of social good and media to spread information that is integral to the mental wellness of the next generation of Black women writers. The same challenges that stop Black women in other aspects of life, such as racial discrimination and socio-economic challenges, often stop access to mental health care, as well as publishing options or opportunities to develop one's craft as a writer.

Spoken Black Girl aims to make this information accessible and open up a new world of possibilities for emerging Black women writers. With this funding, we would be able to pay our magazine contributors and grow a full team of editors, designers, marketing professionals, and other creatives who have already dedicated so much of their time and energy to the mission. We will also fund new books and magazines, giving Black women the opportunity to boost their careers in the literary field while also elevating their well-being.
