Departure Story: a novel
Cover Design: Valentina Alvarez
Celestine Samuels is making the biggest trip of her life…
from Guyana to the United States for college. Celestine Samuels thought leaving Guyana for college in America would be her great escape—from family drama, old expectations, and the weight of home. But when her uncle, a respected politician, is assassinated amid political unrest, her dreams of freedom collide with grief and disillusionment.
Searching for purpose, Celestine joins the Student Council’s Diversity Committee and takes up the fight for a Black dance group facing discrimination on campus. Her defiance makes her a target—and forces her to question who she’s really fighting for.
Caught between the brooding photographer Richard Wirth and the charming football star Don Bradford, Celestine must navigate love, loss, and belonging while confronting painful family secrets that refuse to stay buried.
No matter how far she travels, “home” keeps calling her back—demanding that she face the truth about where she comes from, and who she’s meant to become.
