This month’s Creative Woman Spotlight is Valentina Alvarez.

I met Valentina through the internet. She emailed me with a portfolio of some of the most beautiful photography I had ever seen. She told me she believed in the vision of what I was creating with Spoken Black Girl and she wanted to help make the second magazine! I live in New York and she lives in Portugal. I was nervous to speak to her on the phone for the first time, but as soon as we started to get to know each other, the conversation flowed so easily. The rest is history! Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Valentina grew up with a love for nature.

As she traveled to various regions of Venezuela with her family, she learned about Indigenous, Latin American, and Afro Caribbean cultures. She became passionate about documenting the stories of women through photography and design. Her creative journey brought her to Dublin, Ireland, where she was able to work on several creative campaigns and meet other artists who inspired her to create some of her best work.
