Words as Ministry with Jana J. Jones

Welcome back to the Healing Entrepreneur Podcast, where we dive into stories that blend creativity, wellness, and entrepreneurship. This time, our host, Yaa (Rowana Abbensetts-Dobson), sits down with Jana J. Jones, a prolific author whose journey is as inspiring as her words.

Meet Jana J. Jones

Jana J. Jones is the talented author behind Vivid, What Happened to Alice, and Scenes From a Chrysalis ( get a copy to support!). A Baltimore native now living in Atlanta, Jana brings stories to life that resonate with powerful themes of healing and self-discovery. Her work is deeply inspired by her upbringing and the cultural backdrop of Baltimore, including events like the Baltimore lead paint study that affected many families in the city.

"Writing is my ministry," Jana shares. "Our words are our ministry, no different from a singer or a painter."

Jana's storytelling journey began in her childhood, where her imagination was her closest companion. This early love for narratives paved the way for her to become a voice for change, using her stories to empower and heal.

The Anancy Project

Beyond her books, Jana founded the Anancy Project, a creative writing initiative designed to uplift youth voices. Inspired by literary legends like Mildred D. Taylor and James Baldwin, Jana is committed to nurturing the next generation of storytellers.

Her work through the Anancy Project reflects her belief in the power of youth to shape the future through their unique voices and perspectives.

A Journey of Healing

Jana's storytelling is deeply intertwined with her own journey of healing. Her narratives often explore themes of identity, resilience, and transformation, inviting readers to reflect on their own paths. Reflecting on her influences, Jana mentions authors like Bebe Moore Campbell, whose works on mental health in the African American community have left a lasting impact on her writing.

"I had a very colorful childhood," Jana explains, "which set the foundation for the kind of woman I wanted to be."
